Thorold
Thorold is a small city in the Niagara Region located on the Niagara escarpment, nestled between St Catharines and Niagara Falls.
With a lock on the first Welland canal, this city originated as a collection of small canal villages in the early 1800’s and continued to grow as use of the Welland Canal for shipping increased.
Since the Welland Canal runs through Thorold, the city built the Thorold Tunnel which is an underwater tunnel for cars to pass through on Highway 58 beneath the canal without interrupting traveling vessels. It is the longest tunnel in Ontario and has recently undergone an impressive upgrade since originally built in the 1960’s.
As the official home of Brock University, Thorold caters some of its housing and development towards students and faculty but is also home to family-oriented neighborhoods in excellent proximity to the larger cities of St Catherine's and Niagara
Falls which offer many amenities.
Nature lovers enjoy hiking in the nearby Short Hills Provincial Park, a 1,600-acre conservation area with hiking, fishing, and horseback riding. According to local historians, this area has been inhabited for the past 12,000 years. Don’t miss out on the beautiful DeCew Falls, fed by the Twelve Mile Creek at Morningstar Mill.
Many wineries including Henry of Pelham, Hernder Estates, and Rockway Vineyards are just a short drive away. Golfers will find their fill of local courses, from those that cater to beginners and intermediate level players, to local championship courses.
In recent years, homebuyers from the densely populated Toronto area have flocked to growing Thorold, whose proximity to amenities, warm sense of community and more reasonable home prices offer value that the GTA just can’t match.
The natural beauty, great schools, and friendly neighborhoods make Thorold a picturesque and inviting hometown for a growing family or an ambitious academic pursuing their higher education nearby.
